It was a lovely fall weather, my favorite time of year, as women of style start wearing stockings again after going bare legged and wearing sandals all summer. I was eating lunch at a park alongside a river in downtown, where many office workers enjoyed their lunch break. A very attractive well dressed young lady was walking along the path by the river ... enjoying the sunny, but cooler weather. She was wearing an nice black business suit and grey print blouse, with black patterened stockings ... and very low cut black 2" heeled pumps. I knew she was a natural shoe player, as her shoes slipped ever so slightly off her heels as she walked. I could see she was wearing reinforced heel stockings ... as they would show a little as she walked.

With no benches available to sit, she stopped at a concrete pillar on the pathway by the water and, leaning back against the pillar, began to read a paperback book while enjoying the sun on her face. Ever so slowly she began her shoe play, dipping in and out of first her left heel, and then her right. As time wore on her shoe play became a little more brazen, pulling one foot back and dropping her shoe on the pathway. She constantly was dipping and shoe playing first with one, then the other. The shoe play continued to increase in boldness ... perhaps the novel was coming to an exciting passage, as she really seemed engrossed her her book and oblivious to all else. The dropping of her shoes became even more daring until finally, with her left foot held high and way back behind her, she dropped her shoe once more. But the shoe caught on the very edge of the walkway, and after teetering briefly. fell backward into the water.

She searched with her stockinged foot for her errant shoe, but unable to locate it by feel, she finally stopped reading her book and looked down. She seemed puzzeled at first, looking everywhere, but finally saw her shoe floating in the water, gently moving downstream. She was upset, of course, and began to follow her shoe along the pathway, walking awkwardly with only one heel on. Her floating shoe was a bit too far to reach without getting wet, so she continued to follow hoping for some sort of miracle ... or a white knight to jump in and save her wayward shoe. She continued to follow the path for a short while until she reached the end where the river turned into a small waterfall. She watched helplessly as her shoe, barely floating now, went over the falls into the lake below.

She watched, hopefully, to see it resurface, but it did not reappear. Her shoulders sank as she finally realized what was meant to be. Standing there forlornly with only one shoe on, finally she accepted the inevitable and lifted her leg with the remaining shoe. She removed her shoe ... and to my surprise, threw it in the lake where she expected the mate to be sunk. At least they would be together, she must have been thinking. She walked away shoeless, but after a few minutes, I could see the smile return to her face as she approached the end of the park and the surrounding shopping mall. Her first stop ... an upscale shoe store, of course ! A happy ending with a new pair of shoes. I can only hope this would not discourage her from her talented shoe play.
